The launch ceremony of the maiden edition of the awards was attended by 650 members from the Photographers Association across five states, which according to Dwipal Patel, the marketing director at Photo Orange, is an industry first.

Restricted only to wedding photography, the awards have been categorised under the three categories of: Photo Story of one wedding (eight to 12 images), pre-wedding, and candid moments/emotions.

Patel informed PrintWeek India that the Orange Flash Awards was conceptualised with the motive of creating a knowledge community for the wedding photographers in India. “This initiative is a win-win deal for both the photographer and the photo album printers. A lot of young and amateur photographers do not receive the right support. Additionally, very few photographers are acquainted and aware of the various possibilities with print that they can explore to their benefit. We thus want to bring the two communities on a common ground to share knowledge.”

All this, when the wedding industry in India is pegged at Rs 35,000-crore and trends like pre-wedding shoot and to theme weddings have just begun to gain popularity.

Patel said, “The wedding photography scenario in India is changing. Conventional wedding photography in India focused on an unending series of group photos of relatives standing with bride and the groom. The newer styles are pre-wedding shoots, candid shots, workmanship, photojournalism and so on. Now it is all about capturing the story, the feelings and the candid moments of the special day.”
