Shekhar Iyer, the newly elected president of the All India Printing Ink Manufacturers Association (AIPIMA), has laid out a comprehensive vision for his two-year tenure, emphasising sustainability, enhanced member engagement, and a strengthened industry presence.
"Day one was a moment of deep gratitude and responsibility," stated Iyer, highlighting his commitment to leading the association. AIPIMA currently boasts over 500 active members across India, including ink manufacturers, raw material suppliers, and allied service providers, reflecting its significant footprint across metros and industrial clusters.
The ink industry has experienced a dynamic period in the last two to three years. Iyer noted a distinct shift towards eco-friendly formulations, digital printing technologies, and automation in the past 12 months. "Water-based and UV-cured inks are gaining traction due to regulatory and consumer demand," he explained. "Sustainability is no longer optional—it’s central to innovation."
To bolster the print, packaging, and publishing sectors, AIPIMA has initiated a collaborative platform for dialogue between ink makers, printers, and packaging converters. This initiative aims to address supply chain bottlenecks and promote best practices in compliance and quality, ultimately strengthening the industry's vital role in the economy.
Looking ahead, the next edition of the Asia Coat Show, a popular industry event, is scheduled for early 2026 in Mumbai. Iyer revealed plans to expand its scope to include sustainability showcases, MSME innovation zones, and global keynote speakers to foster cross-border collaboration.
In response to increasing raw material costs, AIPIMA has facilitated roundtables to ensure transparent communication across the value chain. Members have adopted various cost-optimisation strategies and diversified sourcing to mitigate market volatility.
Regarding the recent GST rationalisation, AIPIMA is actively preparing a formal representation to the GST Council. The association will advocate for rational slabs and clarity on input credits for ink and packaging materials, aiming to ensure fair treatment for MSMEs and manufacturers.
Addressing the challenge of regulations and EPR laws, AIPIMA has launched monthly compliance bulletins and webinars with legal experts. These resources are designed to enlighten members about the latest notifications, including EPR norms, BIS standards, and environmental mandates, reinforcing that "awareness is the first step toward responsible action."
Iyer envisions a significant transformation in India's print-packaging world, advocating for "a shift toward circular economy models, where packaging is designed for reuse and inks are biodegradable." He believes in a future where "innovation and sustainability walk hand in hand."
Over the next decade, Iyer anticipates AIPIMA evolving into a "knowledge-driven, globally networked body that not only represents ink makers but also shapes policy, drives innovation, and nurtures future leaders."
