Tholasi Prints customises colour perfection

Varun Tholasi has acquired ISO / Fogra certifications for his Bengaluru-based firm, Tholasi Prints. His passion for high-quality print is the reason for his latest investment – Aniva colour system from Germany-based Epple Druckfarben and Kaleido colour system from Toyo Ink, Japan.

This colour system, according to Tholasi, is developed specifically for special applications like wide-gamut colour printing. Tholasi has gone a step ahead and further customised the system to suit their specific needs.

“With the assistance of our technical partner, Satish Nayak of Bodhi Professional Solutions, we have tweaked the colour system to achieve better results than the original output itself. It enables us to produce deeper, richer and more vibrant colours."

The colour system was put into operation in June 2015.

The Tholasi team boasts of print quality as per ISO / Fogra standards with a tolerance level of under Delta 2 on all their presses. And with the latest investment, according to Tholasi, the quality of the output surpasses this standard. "Technically, we surpass ISO 12647-2 standards by 30%," he said.
He added, "ISO is a set of standards. We can’t confuse standards with quality, especially when it comes to CMYK process colours. TVI curves (dot gains / dot losses), grey balance and the colour gamut play a crucial role in terms of quality.

"We were always trying to reproduce better colours and try our hands on high-pigmented inks. But normal standards did limit us in achieving this. The results since the implementation of the colour system have been outstanding and has enabled us to reproduce photorealistic print quality."

The commerical print specialist is also equipped with quality control instruments like X-rite Platerite, i1pro 2 spectrophotometer, and Easy Control closed loop colour management system from Heidelberg. "We have set standards in all departments, starting in our pre-press. We measure plates for dot gains / dot losses, which are documented on a daily basis. In our press room, we have implemented mellow colour standards, and we measure spectral data to monitor print quality, along with the pH / conductivity which are also documented," added Tholasi.

Furthermore, the firm is in the process of implementing FM screening for even finer dot reproduction. "Colour matching under different lighting is a big challenge for us, we have set up a colour studio under D50 lighting and neutral grey colours with a GTI colour viewing system in place along with hardware calibrated monitors from BenQ."
