The investment is a significant step in the company's strategy to expand beyond commercial and photo printing into the rapidly increasing label and packaging market. With consumer brands wanting shorter print runs, faster turnaround, and better finishes, Upadhyay Colour Copier sees digital labels as a natural next step in its growth strategy.
Pawan Upadhyay, proprietor of Upadhyay Colour Copier, said that the choice was made after months of studying different technologies and understanding evolving client expectations. “We looked at options from Konica, Monotech and Epson,” he told. "While most of them were proficient in printing, they lacked integrated finishing. The Haotian press provided us with everything we needed in one small package, including CMYK and white printing, inline varnishing, and foil. That combination was extremely crucial to us."
Both the Haotian press and the complementary equipment were supplied in India by Packnology Graphics, which provided Upadhyay Color Copier with a complete turnkey solution. The package includes a digital cutter and other essential systems to streamline end-to-end production.
“The support from Packnology has been excellent,” Upadhyay said. “They helped us set up a complete digital label workflow rather than just a machine. Having a single point of supply and service gives us confidence as we expand into this segment.”
The Haotian press operates at speeds of up to 50-m/min, offering almost double the output of comparable digital systems. Traditionally, these procedures were handled by different machines, which necessitated several operators and lengthy production cycles. "With this system, we'll be able to perform jobs faster and more consistently. "It reduces handling, saves time, and ensures better quality control," Upadhyay explained.
He noted that the technology is intended to fulfil the increased need for premium labels in industries such as medicines, fast-moving consumer goods, and cosmetics. Inline foil and varnish, he explained, have become essential in packaging because they give depth, protection, and visual appeal. "Today, labels are more than just identifiers. They are part of the whole brand experience. "The right finish can make a huge difference on the shelf," he explained.
The installation phase will comprise operator training and process standardisation to make the most of the new technology. The company anticipates that full-scale production will commence soon after trials are completed. Early testing, according to Upadhyay, has yielded promising results in colour accuracy, registration precision, and overall surface polish.
Upadhyay Colour Copier has a long-standing reputation for producing high-quality digital and offset printing. The company's change to digital label production reflects a broader trend among regional print businesses, many of which are investing in compact, multi-process systems to remain competitive in a market that values speed and flexibility.
"The industry is evolving. Traditional print demand is levelling, while digital packaging and labelling are on the rise," Upadhyay explained. "We see this as the right time to invest and prepare for the next phase of the business."
