The reigning champions and first-timers bag top honours

The fifth edition of PrintWeek India Awards 2013, which celebrated the 144th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi and his print legacy, saw a close tussle between the reigning champions and first-timers competing for the prism. The ceremony, which was held at Grand Hyatt (Mumbai) on 2 October 2013, was attended by 350 print CEOs.

Mahatma Gandhi’s great grandson Dr Anand Gokani, an endocrinologist and a diabetologist, was the chief guest for the night. While addressing the gathering Dr Gokani said, “Print played an integral role in Gandhiji’s attempt to mobilise the masses against British oppression and it has to play a similar role if India needs to rid itself of the evil that engulf our country today.”

Stressing on the importance of print he said, “When you need to galvanise a country for a movement and spread a thought, print is the most powerful medium.” He, however, added that it was not only important ‘how’ something is printed but ‘what’ is printed.

Hyderabad-based Pragati Offset took home the top honour of Printweek India Printing Company of the Year 2013. The year 2012-13 has seen Pragati garner a lot of awards and accolades, including the most recent Flint Narrow Web Print Awards in UV flexo and security label categories announced during Labelexpo Europe.

Pragati Offset, Parksons Graphics, Utility PrintPack, Jak Printers, Silver Point Press, Viswakala Printers, Manipal Technologies, Any Graphics, Avantika Printers, Marvel Graphic Studio and Spectrum Scan were the previous winners of Awards who continued their winning streak. At the same time, Trigon, Perfect Print & Pack, Anandabazar Patrika, Buzz IMC, Group FMG, Quenby Transfers, New Jack Printing Press and Prodon were the first timers who raised the bar of the competition.
This year’s Awards also saw five awards being shared by joint-winners; a testament of the stiff competition. International Print-o-Pac (New Delhi) and Replika Press (Kundli) shared the Post-Press Company of the Year award. Prodon Enterprises (Mumbai) and Jak Printers (Mumbai) were announced the joint winners of the Book Printer of the Year category.  Silverpoint Press (Mumbai) and Vishwakala Printers (Bengaluru) shared the Catalogue Printer of the Year award.

The Innovative Printer of the Year award ended in a tie between Parksons Graphics (Mumbai) and Spectrum Scan (Mumbai), while Point-of-Purchase (POP) Printer of the Year was shared by Jayna Packaging (Mumbai) and Spectrum Scan (Mumbai).
