R Stanton Avery was an inventor, most known for creating self-adhesive labels. In 1935, he founded what is now the Avery Dennison Corporation. Every year, 13 January, the birthday of R Stanton Avery, is marked as the World Label Day.

Speaking at the function, Guraraj Ballawad, president of ALPS, said that the printing fraternity celebrates Printer’s Day, and though the label printing business is part of printing, the pressure-sensitive label is considered as different segment because of its uniqueness. “On this day, we would like to salute a person who created this segment. From now on, ALPS will celebrate R Stanton Avery’s birthday as World Label Day.”

Pankaj Bhardwaj, senior director and GM for label and graphic materials in South Asia, Avery Dennison, delivered the keynote address. He said, “Labels have played an important role in the evolution of the modern society. It has given power in the hands of the consumers, to choose the product they want. It has made the product more efficient, a communication tool between the manufacturers and consumers.”

Bhardwaj outlined the progress the label has made since 1935 when the first die-cut method, inline machinery and rotary die for self-adhesive labels was deployed to the new heat transfer label technology for garments to clean edge business cards with non-perforated edges created between 2000 and 2009. “Going forward, Avery is working on making labels a two-way communication through R&D as well as capital investment in like-minded companies.”
