Vivian Forbes' Invention of the Printing Press

On Tuesday, 30 September, Kailash Kuntewad, a farmer from Maharashtra, took the hot seat at the 17th season of Kaun Banega Crorepati. After answering 14 questions correctly and securing INR 50-lakh, Kuntewad was asked the next question for INR one-crore.

The question? “In the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the painting titled Invention of the Printing Press by Vivian Forbes depicts whom?” The options were: Johann Fust, William Caxton, Johannes Gutenberg, and Richard Hoe.

Kuntewad opted to use a lifeline and chose Video Call a Friend and the 50-50 option, yet remained uncertain. Playing it safe, he chose to quit.

But the answer? The answer is William Caxton. Born in 1422, Caxton was an English writer, diplomat, and businessman.  In addition to being the first printer to sell printed books in England, he is credited with bringing a printing press to the country in 1476.

Caxton started a printing press company in Bruges in partnership with Colard Mansion after observing the booming printing industry in Cologne while on business. Caxton also established a press at Westminster in 1476 due to the high demand for his translations. His first known publication was an edition of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales; he went on to write romances, classical classics, and English and Roman histories.

Additionally, he is known for having contributed to the spread of Chancery Standard, a London dialect of Middle English, across England.
