Middle East remains a fast-growing market: Manoj Mehta

The geopolitical unrest in the Middle East has naturally created a sense of caution among businesses, but according to Manoj Mehta, an industry expert and past-president of AIFMP, the printing and packaging industry in the region has shown remarkable resilience. Talking to PrintWeek, Mehta said that many companies continue to operate normally, though with increased attention to risk management, logistics planning, and supply security.

He said, “Business sentiment is somewhat cautious, especially regarding cross-border trade and international shipments. Yet day-to-day operations at most printing and packaging companies continue with minimal disruption. The industry largely serves essential sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods, ensuring demand remains relatively stable even during uncertain times.”

On whether the Indian packaging industry has been affected by the ongoing situation, Mehta said there have been some indirect effects, particularly on logistics and freight movement. “In times of geopolitical tension, shipping routes, insurance costs, and transit times can become unpredictable. Some companies are monitoring shipments more closely and diversifying suppliers where possible,” he said, adding, “That said, the printing and packaging sector is quite adaptable. Many companies in the Middle East maintain diversified supply chains across Asia, Europe, and regional markets. While there may be short-term logistical adjustments, customer demand — especially from FMCG, food, pharmaceuticals, and eCommerce — remains strong.

Mehta believes the medium-term outlook remains positive. The Middle East remains a fast-growing packaging market, driven by rising consumption, a strong retail sector, and expanding manufacturing.

“Even during periods of geopolitical uncertainty, demand for packaging — especially in food, beverages, healthcare, and eCommerce — remains essential. In fact, many countries in the region are investing heavily in local manufacturing and supply chain resilience, which will likely create new opportunities for printers and packaging converters,” he said.

Overall, Mehta concluded, while businesses remain watchful, the printing and packaging industry in the Middle East is expected to maintain steady growth in the coming months.
