Sarma is also an award-winning poet and short story author. He published his first poetry collection with Writers Workshop in 2004 and distributed it for free. When he was ready with his next collection in 2014, he decided to publish the book himself, at a whim.

Two years later, he completed a project of translating Assamese poet Sananta Tanty’s poems into English, which was published in February 2017. Tanty is the Sahitya Akademi Award winner in 2018.

So far, Sarma has poured his hard earned money into publishing 16 books that includes classics such as Pages from an Unfinished Autobiography, Country Drive, Strings Attached and Book of Prayers among others.
