SMI’s Dubai unit in the Jabel Ali Free Zone consisting of a slitting terminal will stock labelstock forecasting the market demand, and slit and sell the material as per customer requirement.

Speaking to PrintWeek India, Mehta said, “UAE is a major hub for processing and repacking of a range of products. It is the heart of manufacturing activities in the Middle East. We have been planning to have a base outside India and UAE seemed to be a perfect location,” said Mehta.

SMI has been supplying to UAE directly from India for over a decade. “The clients buy slit material as well as jumbo reels. However, they had to collate a container load order every time. This leads to overstocking of material,” added Mehta.

“We will stock the majority of our fast selling labelstock solutions. Besides this, we will also provide support for the specialised products. Normally, from the time of placing the order till the time the material reaches the factory it takes between two to four weeks, we wish to cut this down to two to four days.”

With this move, not only will the label printers in UAE be able to get the labelstock just in time, having a vendor closer to their operations will help them minimise their inventory and working capital, and also free up the space being used for stocking the material.
