Algorithms for photo printing

There was a time when digital print was not allowed to compete. It is a pity since our industry tends to segregate rather than unite. At the PrintWeek India Awards, we have celebrated digital colour printing in all the six editions. Our brief to the jury was: Look for gradients and tints, solid colours, and skin tones. How can this be determined since digital printing devices do not use traditional halftone dots; they all have secret and proprietary algorithms for rendering photographs. This survey looks at what is driving digital print in India.

A thrust on decoration

Magazines, it turns out, connect with us at a far deeper level than most media. They’re part of high quality ‘me’ time, and rate very high on engagement and trust scores. That’s the reason PrintWeek India’s Award category looks seriously at Business and Consumer Magazines; and B2B niche titles as well. A look at the print samples indicate the paper preferences for the printing of cover and inside pages of the magazines plus top trends in decoration techniques such intelligent use of gatefolds, foiling, laser-cutting etc. This Survey mapped 122 print companies. And looked at how magazines are printed in India.

Others simply show off the luxury brands for consumption. During the PrintWeek India survey of 1280+ print samples and 327 comments, one thing emerged: The increase in value addition and how packaging converters are offering new techniques to improve product’s differentiation on the shelf.
