Technically everyone should have been a winner in this category. But Matrubhumi Printing & Publishing’s solid steps towards green have made the company a worthy winner.

There are many reasons. For one, it is Seed (Student Empowerment for Environmental Development) which was launched on 5 June 2009. The outreach has been stupendous. More than eight thousand active schools have been tapped in 14 districts of Kerala. This means young students have protected saplings, they have harvested crops, collected plastic waste and sent it for recycling. Plus there are quiz competitions as well as rallies, seminars, poster exhibitions. And finally, the SEED schools which have conserved 8.16 million litres of water.

Mathrubhumi’s Kozhikode plant in Ramanattukara, spread across 1,20,000 square feet (on approximately seven acres of land) is a tiny oasis with a natural pond created through rainwater harvesting as well as a grove of trees. Mathrubhumi has embarked on constructing a butterfly park during 2022.

In addition there is a proper waste management policy. The Group has an agreement with KEIL (Kerala Enviro Infrastructure Limited) for the processing of hazardous wastes. Plus the Group has invested in a Hunkler AG baling plant to handle paper waste management systems.

The high-density paper briquettes are sent to paper recycling plants via paper collecting companies.

Greener, more energy-efficient operations like energy efficient buildings have reduced the amount of pollution a factory generates. Mathrubhumi has optimised different parts of its operation to save energy, thus ensuring zero carbon emission.
One to emulate.
