Astra has been manufacturing water-based adhesives since 2000 at its plant located in Tarapur, Maharashtra. It began producing hotmelt adhesives last year.

Sandeep Pai of Astra Chemtech said, “We have been supplying water-based adhesives and PSAs to various customers across India, over the past two decades. However, in less than one year since the launch of hotmelt adhesives, we have been able to make inroads in the book binding, labelling and hygiene industries at a few customers across India. Our key customers include Manipal Technologies, Navneet Education, TechNova, Kalajyothi Process, Pragati Offset, Print Plus, Jak Printers, Mafatlal Industries, Walmark Meditech, Vaidya Hygiene, Bhartiya Hygiene and Solace Hygiene to name a few.”

Astra’s hotmelt plant cover 25,000 sqft built up area with a manufacturing capacity of 5,000 metric tonnes per annum. Besides this, it has a 50,000 sqft factory for manufacturing water-based adhesives with an installed capacity of 24,000 metric tonnes per annum. Plus it also manufactures solvent-based adhesives; PU-based adhesives; and UV varnishes.

“While we believe that the book printing and labelling sector is growing at a single-digit rate, we are very bullish about our growth in the hotmelt segment. We have the hygiene industry growing exponentially. Since we are new entrants in this market, we have the entire, nearly 12-15 kilotonnes per annum, hotmelt market to target. Of this, we hope to hit the three kilotonnes per annum mark by 2020. We are geared up for 2020 and we are investing in the next couple of years, for the future,” added Pai.
