IRS 2019 Q1: Dainik Jagran retains lead followed by Dainik Bhaskar

Hindi daily Dainik Jagran is the most read newspaper in the country with a total readership (TR) of 7.37 crore in the last one month of the survey, up from 7 crore a year ago, followed by Dainik Bhaskar (5.14 crore), according to the IRS data released on 26 April 2019.

However, Dainik Jagran, which grew by 4.7% in total readership in IRS 2019 Q1 over the previous survey in 2017, has remained stagnant in terms of average issue readership (AIR). The newspaper recorded an AIR of 2,02,58,000 in the current survey compared with 2,02,41,000 in IRS 2017.

The readership numbers for Hindustan, the No. 2 Hindi daily in IRS 2017, has not been released by MRUC for some verification process.

Without Hindustan in the top 10 list, Dainik Bhaskar is the second largest Hindi daily in 2019 Q1, recording the maximum growth among top 10 Hindi dailies. Bhaskar had an AIR of 1,53,95,000 in IRS 2019 Q1, up 10.98% from 1,38,72,000 in IRS 2017.

The AIR of No 4 Hindi daily Amar Ujala and No 7 Hindi daily Patrika declined by 8.8% and 8.33%, respectively. Owing to the decline, Patrika lost its sixth position to Punjab Kesari.
