The selection process is open to feature films, TV productions and series that are based on literary works or children's and young adult books.

Together with the MGIP Motovun Group of International Publishers, Frankfurter Buchmesse will also awards the prize for the best illustrated book on film. The award highlights the implementation of a film-relevant topic in book form.

Last year, the Norwegian drama Out Stealing Horses, which director Hans Petter Moland filmed with Stellan Skarsgård, based on the novel by Per Petterson, won the award for Best Literary Adaptation. The winner in the category Best Adaptation for Children or Young Adults was the Dutch drama My Extraordinary Summer with Tess based on the book by Anna Woltz (director: Steven Woulterlood; screenplay: Laura van Dijk). The big Illusion or How to build a Movie Miracle, published by the Slovakian publishing house Slovart, won the race in the category Best Illustrated Book on Film.

The award ceremony for the Frankfurter Buchmesse Film Awards will be held as part of the B3 Biennial of the Moving Image opening and the B3 BEN Awards on 9 October 2020.

For submissions in the category Best Book on Film publishers are invited to send a digital copy of the submitted title (at least consisting of the cover, 5-10 pages of content and a summary of the content as well as any accompanying press material or a publisher's presentation) in addition to the submission form by e-mail to film@buchmesse.de. Publishers from Germany and abroad can apply. However, the submitted books must not be published before August 2019 and must be available for delivery.
