Malayala Manorama celebrate quasquicentennial jubilee

The regional Malayalam daily Malayala Manorama, which was set up in 1888, celebrated its 125 years anniversary recently with the president of the nation Pranab Mukherjee attending the festivities at their Kodimatha printing plant.

Kerala Governor H R Bharadwaj presided over the function. Kapil Sibal, minister for communications and IT delivered the keynote address.

In his speech Kapil Sibal said that free expression is essential for a democratic civil society. "Malayala Manorama understood this responsibility and helped in development of the nation and society," he added.

Talking at the event, President Mukherjee said, “Manorama has not just chronicled events since it began its amazing journey, but has also played an active role in bringing changes in the country and the society.

Mukherjee also released a commemorative stamp with a Malayala Manorama theme.

From its humble beginnings in the late 19 century, when they started out with a print run of less than 500, they have become one of the most widely-circulated regional dailies with a circulation of about 2.1 million copies and are published from 16 centres in India and two centres abroad.

Mammen Mathew, chief editor, Malayala Manorama said “Even with the changing times, our media house held on to its values which revolved around secularism and fighting social evils.”
