Madhavrao Ambavale awarded Mudran Maharshi Pratishthan’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Pune-based Mudran Maharshi Dr Pa Bha Kulkarni Pratishthan organised its third Scholarship Distribution Programme on 9 August 2017. The highlight of the event was the Pratishthan’s Lifetime Achievement Award, which was conferred on Madhavrao Ambavale, founder of Maharashtra Book Binding Works. Pune Mayor Mukta Tai Tilak handed over the award to Ambavale.

Ramu Ramanathan, editor of PrintWeek India and Mehul Desai, founder and chairman, Mail Order Solutions, were the main speakers at the event. They regaled the students and others present at the event with their print experiences. Ramanathan also showed a short animation film. This was followed by a Q&A sessions.

Tilak also spoke on the occasion and presented the certificate to the students.

The Pratishthan, which started its activities on 26 August 2015 in Pune, is dedicated to the betterment of printing education and recognition of those who have excelled in the printing industry.

As a first step in achieving this goal, the organisation has started awarding scholarships to deserving students of the printing faculty of the institutes run by Pune Vidyarthi Griha. Every year, it also felicitates one person from the printing industry for his/her outstanding work and contributions to the industry.

During its first year, the Scholarship Distribution Programme was attended by more than four hundred people comprising of students, staff, special invitees and industry specialists. The chief guest was noted industrialist DS Kulkarni, who started his career with a printing press.

In the second year, the chief guest was Dr Vishwanathji Karad, founder chairman, MIT group of Institutions. Dr Rajendrakumar Anayath also attended the event in 2016, who guided the students through interactive session highlighting technological trends and opportunities in the print industry post-Drupa 2015.

In 2015, three stalwarts from the education and printing fields and long time colleagues of Pa Bha, namely Sarvashri Pandit Vasantrao Gadgil, JG Phagare and Prof NS Mujumdar were felicitated at the hands of DS Kulkarni. In 2016, the Lifetime Achievement Award was graciously accepted by Vasudevji Shah.

About Madhavrao Ambavale

Madhavrao Ambavale alias Anna was born in poor but hard working family on 15 June 1938. Being from financially weaker section, to support his family, he started his journey of life with a job in a small hotel and then soon landed in a printing press job at a salary of Rs 2 per week. This is where he started liking the print and allied work and decided to continue in print.

In 1959, he joined the Government Press in Pune called Photozinco Press, to help bring his family on track both financially and socially. Even after getting stable government job, his passion of doing his own business never allowed to settle him until he started his own venture of a book binding firm, popularly known as Ambavale Binders in 1975. Soon his binding firm was very popular as he started serving Balbharati, the Maharashtra State Bureau of Text Book Production and Curriculum Research through his dedication, hard work, passion and timely delivery of millions of quality bound books.

Anna has played a vital role in development of Pune Press Owners Associated while he was a director of the institute and was a very close associate of Dr Pa Bha Kulkarni. Anna was a founder member of Pune District Master Printers Association and has served the institute as a vice-president.

This year, Anna has celebrated his 80th birthday and is still very active in his business along with his next generation happily guides young entrepreneurs with endless zeal and enthusiasm.
