TNPL enhances production with Valmet’s advanced pulp technology

Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers (TNPL) has integrated Valmet’s Continuous Cooking G3 and TwinRoll Press technologies into its hardwood kraft pulp production line. This upgrade aims to improve pulp quality, energy efficiency, and sustainability at its Mondipatti mill in Trichy district.

TNPL’s board machine, which has been operational since 2016, previously relied entirely on purchased pulp. Fluctuating prices and supply uncertainties prompted the company to explore in-house pulp production. By leveraging its existing pulpwood plantations, TNPL sought to secure a long-term fibre supply for its 200,000-tonne per year paperboard facility.

After evaluating global suppliers, TNPL selected Valmet’s Continuous Cooking G3 for its energy efficiency, environmental compliance, and pulp quality. The system reduces steam and chemical consumption, and the TwinRoll Press enhances washing efficiency. Commissioned in January 2022, the line reached full capacity within four months, producing pulp for TNPL’s premium packaging board grades.

The project faced challenges due to Covid, including travel restrictions during commissioning. Valmet’s team used remote access to support TNPL, enabling a smooth start-up. The mill’s operators reported stable pulp quality, low chemical usage, and consistent brightness.

TNPL highlighted the compact design of Valmet’s system, which reduced the carbon footprint, and the reliability of maintenance-free equipment. The company also noted the success of advanced process controls integrated directly into the plant’s DCS, eliminating delays in optimisation.
