On 7 May 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Government of Tamil Nadu, represented by the district collector of Virudhunagar, Dr VP Jeyaseelan, and Sripathi Paper and Boards to address the issue of untreated wastewater polluting the Urinjikulam tank in Sivakasi.

Currently, untreated wastewater from Periyakulam and Chengulam tanks pollutes the Urinjikulam tank, affecting surface and groundwater quality in the region. The project will first begin with the cleaning of four lakes, Sengulam, Kadambakulam, Urinjakulam, and Parpankulam.

Following this, a sewage treatment plant for six-million litres per day will be set up at Sripathi Paper and Boards with indigenous Indian technology developed by the School of Sustainability of IIT- Madras.

The objective of this technology is twofold: one, to ensure these lakes remain rain-fed freshwater lakes to restore the natural ecology of the lake, and two, to use the treated water for paper manufacturing and thereby revitalise the water table of Tiruthangal, one of the zones of Sivakasi City Municipal Corporation.

The lake cleaning is sponsored by Raja KSP Ganesan Trust and undertaken by Sivakasi Green Forum.
