Smithers says tariffs impacts used print equipment exports from the USA to India

New research from Smithers, a leading authority on the printing industry, highlights a significant challenge facing the global printing market: the export of used sheetfed offset hardware. A key finding from their latest white paper, Impact of Tariffs on Printing, indicates that this segment will be particularly affected, primarily because a substantial portion of these machines is destined for India and China, where tariff rates remain elevated.

The report projects a potential decline of 6.4% in the US printing market by 2030 due to the broader impact of tariffs, which could lead to the closure of over 1,000 companies. While the overall decline encompasses various segments, the specific emphasis on used sheetfed offset hardware underscores its vulnerability to ongoing trade tensions.

The high tariffs imposed by India and China on imported goods, including machinery, create a considerable barrier for US exporters of used printing equipment. This situation not only impacts the profitability of these exports but also influences the availability and pricing of such hardware in these key Asian markets. Printers and suppliers are being forced to explore strategies like reshoring and establishing regional hubs to mitigate future tariff risks, indicating a broader shift in global supply chains.

Despite these challenges, the report notes that the global printing demand is still projected to reach USD355.2 billion by 2030. However, growth could decline further by up to 3.1% in a pessimistic scenario, emphasising the pervasive influence of tariff-related uncertainty. The specific impact on used sheetfed offset hardware exports to India and China serves as a critical example of how trade policies are reshaping the international printing industry, influencing investment decisions and market dynamics in developing economies.
