Marginal readership growth for newspapers, magazine readership drops

The Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2012 Q3 data were released by the Media Research Users Council (MRUC) on 29 January, 2013, while most of the top dailies recorded sub 1% growth.

Dainik Jagran continues to lead the top 10 newspapers list; Dainik Bhaskar and Hindustan complete the top-three, with all of them showing similar growth of around 0.3%.

In an almost unchanged list from Q2 (Daily Thanthi gained a spot as it swapped place with Lokmat on the list). Times of India remains the sole English representative on the list. The top 10 English dailies remained unchanged, with third-placed Hindu showing the best growth numbers.

Meanwhile, magazines continue to witness slide in AIR with seven of the top 10 magazines seeing a decline in readership in Q3.

Hindi magazines Samanya Gyan Darpan and Meri Saheli and Bengali magazine Karmakshetra are the only three to have witnessed growth in AIR. Among English magazines, six of the top 10 have shown a decline in readership. India Today continues to lead among English magazines. Magazine readership has dropped by 2.88%.

Growth was seen in all media. With print registering a 0.7% growth, which is reflected at almost stagnant growth numbers of most newspapers.
