The A to Z of PrintPack: Day One and Day Two - The Noel D'Cunha Sunday Column

PrintPack 2019 is a top destination for the Indian print community. More than 450 exhibitors and thousands of visitors have ensured the first week of February will guarantee the best show ever.

The Sunday Column (with inputs from a 12-member PrintWeek India team) looks at Day One and Day Two of the six-day show and helps both visitors and non visitors about the latest action from the India Expo Centre and Mart in Greater Noida.

A for ... Ample Graphics who have installed 16 fully automatic rigid box manufacturing machines. The company sees growth of rigid box manufacturing in India. Besides the 16 automatic rigid box machines, Ample Graphics has also sold 25 Taincen dry lamination machines since the establishment of the company.

 


B for ... Bobst announced the installation of the Novacut E 106 E, the third generation die-cutting machine, and a Bobst VisionFold 110 folder-gluer at Jaipur’s Shuban Prints. The third generation upgrade to the NovaCut 106 E underlines the virtues of minimising stoppages and faster changeover of jobs.

 

 


C for ... Chennai-based Monotech Systems and Delhi-based Pressline India who have joined hands to develop a high speed inkjet web-integrated solution for print-on-demand. The first-of-its-kind Jetsci-Pressline machine was on display at PrintPack. Finishing facility for the system is provided by Kerala-based Welbound.

 

 


D for ... DGM India, the 100% subsidiary of China-based DGM Machinery, announced the sale of its folder-gluer, SmartFold 1100PC to Pragati Pack. The SmartFold 1100PC can process straight line, crash lock bottom and double wall boxes. This folder-gluer can handle solid board up to 800-gsm and E, F & N corrugated cartons up to 20-mm folded thickness at the maximum speed of 400-m/min.

 

 


E for ... Esko who demonstrated the latest version of its flagship pre-press editor Artpro+, which, has a host of unique features to speed up the artwork editing process and also minimise human errors in the process.

 

 


F for ... FaceBook Lives plus the launch of Books for All campaign. P Sajith, director, Impel Services, (A Welbound group company) who launched the Books for All campaign on Day One said, "If you’ve let reading slide to the margins of your life, now is the time to bring it back. Books for All aims to spread the joy of reading and bolster book readership." The initiative is simple but beautiful. To gift a book to a child you know - and also a child you don't know.

 


G for ... Ganpati Imperial India at Hall 14 Stall K105 is making visitors of PrintPack India 2019 take a pause and look again. The brand logo mounted on the stall is a hand-made design, imported from Singapore, just like the inks Ganesh Imperial is showcasing. The idea was to highlight the company’s Iris Van sheetfed process ink. According to the company, Iris Van delivers fast-setting gloss, and can be used in a wider range of products, especially in the packaging industry. Apart from Iris Van, Ganpati also highlighted its range of conventional inks, UV LED inks and special inks, among others.

 

 


H for ... Heidelberg India who announced the sale of two Masterwork kits — Easymatrix 106FC to TCPL and Easymatrix 106 C/CS to Amber Print Pack. Hosting the function, Peter Rego, general manager for Heidelberg India, announced the sale of two Masterwork kits — Easymatrix 106FC to TCPL and Easymatrix 106 C/CS to Amber Print Pack. Heidelberg has inked an agreement with the Chinese post-press specialist Masterwork Group (Masterwork) under which the latter will obtain an 8.5% stake in the former. The Easymatrix 106 CS series is one of the popular kits with 170 installations worldwide since it was launched after the Heidelberg-Masterwork tie-up. Around 10% of the machines are installed in Germany. In India, there are 12 machines installed.

 

 


I for ... ImagePress. New Delhi-based digital print specialist Avantika purchased its second Canon C8000, which will replace the company’s existing ImagePress C800. The Avantika shopfloor is home to Canon presses, a C800, which will be replaced by the C8000, an existing C8000 and an Oce mono production press and a Canon large-format press. The firm is one of the multiple time winners of the PrintWeek India Digital Printer of the Year Award, the last time being a joint-winner in 2017.

 

 


J for ... JN Arora Group has been in the business of supplying printing consumables for more than 50 years, with a network of six own locations in Delhi–NCR and a network of dealers and sales representatives throughout India, offering all kinds of consumables used in offset, flexographic, security, screen graphics, screen textile, digital sublimation printing and a range of adhesives and special tapes.


K for ... K for ... Komori launched a UV curing system that uses a UV lamp/LED module developed with its own know-how and high-sensitivity UV ink. With just one lamp/LED module mounted in the delivery, this system offers high print quality and reliability as well as excellent economic and eco-friendly performance. The H-UV system has been in worldwide use since it was released in 2009. Since then, orders for H-UV system have totalled to 1,002 presses, including 527 in Japan and 475 abroad. According to Sangam Khanna of Komori, the company has sold 22 H UV enabled presses in India. “Moving forward, Komori sees that the H UV technology is here to stay along with the new HUV L (the LED H UV) presses in India,” says Khanna.

 


L for ... Line O Matic. Ahmedabad-based Line O Matic, the pioneers in exercise book-making machines, launched multiple machines at PrintPack. Among the launches were the Spiral-Wiro book binding machine, Bolt RB104 Max - upgraded version of Bolt RB104 automatic exercise book making machine and SWM 100 shrink wrapping machine. To-date Line O Matic has installed more than 4,000 machines worldwide. Line O Matic has recently installed the Bolt RB104 at Bengaluru-based printer Blossom and exported one to France. M for ... Madkartar Technologies buys Lishun Yuan rigid box machine. The rigid box manufacturing business of Madkarter Technologies is a joint venture between Sterling Publishers and Madkarter Technologies. The plant is located in the Greater Noida-based production facility of Sterling Publishers. The automatic high speed machine can produce 25 to 35 rigid boxes per minute. The boxes can be of 55 to 400-mm long, 55 to 350-mm wide and 10 to 120-mm in height.

 

 


N for ... Nexpress from Toyo. Last year Toyo saw a 33% growth, touching an annual turnover of Rs 382-crore. With Nexpress, Toyo is moving into the packaging segment. Nexpress inks feature a new series of Benzophenone-free and ITX-free UV inks that are specifically formulated for indirect food contact folding carton applications. The Nexpress flexible packaging series features a non-toluene, non-MEK series of gravure lamination inks that are specially formulated for food labels, packaging and other consumer products.

 


O for ... Om Prakash, managing director, ePrint Machinery which is based in Chennai aims to continue its steady growth story as it steps into the third year. "We did little more than 20 Horizon installations last year and we are quietly confident of doing 50% more this year and push forward the agenda for our smart finishing solution which would one massive end-to-end automated system," he added. The company's own eCut cutting machines have been making solid grounds with almost 20 machines being installed so far, with 11 in India, four in Nepal and two each in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

 


P for ... Provin Technos, RMGT’s India representative, demonstrated Smart Glass android-based wearable remote service concept for the presses. This wearable remote assist system investigates local situation of press troubles that customer faces and guides and instructs how to take troubleshooting and counter action for the recovery. The Smart Glass device is capable of transferring live feed with data transfer and on-the-spot notes, plus the service support engineer can examine the information and advice the user remotely. Also, Provin announced a JV with Japan-based Techno Roll to manufacture rubber rollers in India.


Q for ... QIPC EAE India is showcasing ids-3d, a unique patented image-based solution that combines colour and register control in one camera that can also be configured for detecting production failures.


R for ... Riso which launches "world’s fastest digital duplicator" which is the SF 9390. To-date Riso boasts of having installed more than 10,000 machines across India.

 

 


S for ... SSA Amrutha Folder Tech notches 12 installations in 10 months. At PrintPack, SSA Amrutha Folder Tech displayed its Super City 0088, a customisable, high-speed folder-gluer. The folder-gluer has several configurations, including six or four tracks with lock bottom, cache cover, mini matchbox etc. It also comes with an automatic feeder clutch assembly, microprocessor-based digital batch counter with striker wait-n-hit control and crash lock bottom attachments.

 

 


T for ... TechNova has bagged two orders for its new Thermostar T9 HS platesetter. New Delhi-based Nutech Print Services and Venus Graphics have opted to bring in the Thermostar T9 HS platesetter from TechNova. The thermal device was introduced in October 2018 by Amsky with TechNova giving it an India debut at PrintPack 2019.

 

 


U for ... Union Budget which was presented on Day One of PrintPack. The government has increased the ad rates to Indian newspapers by 25%. The hike (effective from 8 January) is over and above the existing rate structure for advertisement in print media by the Bureau of Outreach and Communication (erstwhile DAVP). The previous revision transpired in 2013, when an increase of 19% had been announced over and above the rates of 2010.

 


V for ... Velocity, a high-speed automatic carton folding and gluing machine which is manufactured by Boxtech in Bengaluru. The company, which is nearing the 500 installations mark (486 as on date) had a fruitful 2018 with more than 20 installations. It aims to better it in 2019 with at least 30 installations.

 

 


W for ... Weather is nippy. And could plummet to a low single digit on Tuesday and Wednesday mainly because of cloudy conditions and winds. Exhibitors who are packing up please note, the met department says, "thunderstorms on Thursday morning".

 


Y for ... Yes, the first two days of PrintPack 2019 have been amazing. Kudos to IPAMA and all the exhibitors and the visitors. May print prosper.

 


X for ... X-Rite. Indian representatives of X-Rite, Advanced Graphic Systems, has launched eXact Auto-scan which is a versatile scanning solution designed for press operators that provides press room flexibility for measuring colour with spot, manual and automated scanning capabilities.

 


Z for ... Zhongke which witnessed packaging major TCPL invest in the Yongshun YS SR 108 automatic high speed dry lamination machine with hot knife cutter and a fully automatic high speed Tokyo Wenhongflute laminator. Both the machines will be installed in the company’s newly established plant in Goa. Rohit Rajpal, CEO, Zhongke India, said, “We have sold three flute laminators on the first day of exhibition to TCPL Packaging, Replika Press and PackMaax India. The number of installations of our lamination machine is more than 50 now.”
