PrintWeek India Awards 2019: Quality production under tight deadlines

An enormous amount of effort goes into printing newspapers owing to the pressures of daily production. Achieving a consistent quality of print under tight deadlines is one of the major challenges that the newspaper printers face.

However, the printers use different and innovative tools to meet their daily targets of production, depending on the type of jobs. Keeping this in mind, PrintWeek India’s Newspaper Printer of the Year Award aims to recognise the newspaper printer that demonstrates the best newsprint-based product.

Commenting on the selection process of the winner, Noel D’Cunha, managing editor of PrintWeek India, said, “The jury will analyse the parameters regarding how a newspaper efficiently adheres to the print quality guidelines, despite having frequent editorial changes, several localised editions, tight scheduling, and constant plate changes.”

Last year, Malayala Manorama, a Kottayam-based Malayalam language daily, was named winner in Newspaper Printer of the Year category, which provided a supreme print quality in the midst of the setbacks caused by 2018 Kerala floods.

The pressures of daily production are painstaking. In mass-production jobs such as newspapers, where it is vital to maintain the scale and speed of the press, the make-ready time, job changeover and the pre-press has to be spot on, to achieve the perfect quality of print.”

Dainik Divya Marathi, Hind Samachar, Jagran Prakashan, Punjab Kesari, and Rajasthan Patrika were the other companies shortlisted in this category.

Ahmedabad-based DB Corp had bagged the award for two consecutive years in (2016 and 2017) for the print quality of its Gujarati daily Divya Bhaskar.

Entries can include newspaper supplements and products printed on improved newsprint, but are not eligible on their own.
