Brilliant’s S621 won an award at the IFCA which is a solvent-free adhesive for flexible packaging. It is a two component polyurethane laminating adhesive which is ideal for thin PE film lamination. Its USP is it is an innovative product with negligible increase in COF after lamination even with thin PE films.

It can be used on printed and unprinted substrates like polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, aluminium foil and metallised substrates.

Today Brilliant Polymer is India’s leading manufacturer of laminating adhesives for the flexible packaging industry. Talwar said it holds “a 34% market share” due to it leadership in solvent-based and solvent-free adhesives.

The company has 3% global market share; and the 2022–23 sales are expected to be 32,000 MT. This translates into 5%+ of global demand. Brilliant (as reported in WhatPackaging? magazine) has enhanced capacity to 45,600 MT per year by investing Rs 100-cr.

Talwar said the group is growing its presence in several new countries. And evaluating technologies like water-based adhesives, heat seal and cold seal adhesives. “Solvent-free adhesives will remain our key focus area for almost 70% of our revenue.”

There are benefits of solvent-free adhesives, the first one being; there is no volatile emission since no solvent is used; there is no risk of solvent retention; energy is saved; we obtain faster line speeds; there is lower risk of fire hazards and 50% of the cost is saved.

Talwar said, “Solvent-free technologies and food packaging will be major drivers of growth for laminating adhesives for the Asia Pacific markets. He said there was a demand of 850 KT in 2021. This included solvent-based, solvent-free, water-based, heatseal and coldseal adhesives.

Talwar pointed out that solvent-free laminating adhesives are growing over proportionally. In this, the food packaging segment held the largest revenue share of 64%.
