Arvind B Mardikar: In current scenario, we must stick to basics, no over-expansion and no unhealthy competition

What has been the impact of Covid-19 on your business thus far?

I think I am lucky as far as the March-end is concerned. I could sense something big is coming. I started pushing my customers from 1 March. This worked and by the time lockdown was announced, more than 90% target was achieved on sales as well as on collection front. I am hopeful by April-end things will improve.

In the short term, how are you assessing the risks and planning for the possible impact?

I think after 35 years in the business, experience has taught me how to face issues. As of now I am fully covered for April month. Presuming things will be under control soon, I do not foresee massive negative impact.

Some businesses have acted, asking staff to work from home, doing daily temperature checks, distributing critical tasks across offices, and restricting travel. What steps have you undertaken?

We are fully supporting lockdown and strictly following government directives. We have completely shutdown business activities. Entire staff has been briefed as to how to take precautions. It is mandatory for each and every staff member to keep in touch with each other through specially created WhatsApp group.

How is your company staying in touch with your partners / customers?

Keeping contact through personal text messages, eMails and occasionally through phone calls.

Do you invest in health care, and is there a robust system in place?

We have group health and group accident insurance policies covering each and every staff member.

In current scenario, I feel one must stick to basics, no over-expansion and no unhealthy competition. Ideally, this is the right time to work in close neat group (no way any cartel) and combine synergies and create win-win situation for all. This is more than a project by itself.

One suggestion for the government?

The government is in full control of the situation and is sensitive enough to listen to smallest of small person, so no specific suggestion. As proud citizens we must support government, remain calm and optimistic. No need to panic.
