This is not the first time that Manjushree has promoted the cause of responsible use and disposal of plastics. In 2015, Manjushree’s ‘Recycling Superheroes’ brigade collected over 5,000 plastic bottles at the TCS World 10K Run and sent them for recycling. They also distributed adhesive stickers carrying messages on recycling to be stuck on water bottles.

Surendra Kedia, executive director, Manjushree Technopack , said, “The metropolitan cities, including Bengaluru, consume over 60% of Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) which is dominated by plastic packaging. Plastic consumption, on an average is 10 kg per capita per annum. This number is expected to increase to 20 kg by 2020 across the country. While we all reap the benefits of plastic in everyday life, we fail to properly dispose or recycle the plastic.”

“About 60 cities in India generate over 15,000 tonnes of plastic waste per day, out of which only 9,205 tonnes are collected and recycled, leaving behind 6,137 tonnes that remain littered and uncollected. It is imperative that every one of us contribute to better disposal and recycling of plastics to create a sustainable environment for future generations,” he added.

Manjushree is also developing a ‘Plastics Recycling Innovation’ Centre (PRIC) which will pave the way for exploration and research in reuse of PET plastic waste. PRIC will look at new ways of reusing plastics and creating every day, low-cost utility items, given the convenience and versatility of the material.
