Four Indian news publishers nominated for Asian Media Awards

Four Indian newspaper companies — Malayala Manorama, Jagran Prakashan, India Today Group and Kasturi & Sons — are among the finalists of the Asian Media Awards at Publish Asia 2017. The winners of the prestigious Asian Media Awards will be honoured at a gala dinner at Publish Asia 2017, in Kuala Lumpur, on 19 April.

Created in 2000, and organised by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (Wan-Ifra), Publish Asia is an annual meeting place for the Asian newspaper and news publishing industry. This year, more than 300 media executives from over 30 countries will gather in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) on 18-20 April for three days of masterclasses, conference sessions and networking events. 

Selected by a jury composed of 25 international media executives, several projects in different categories have been nominated to receive the Asian Media Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards:

The India Today Group and the Malayala Manorama Company (for The Week) have been nominated in the Best Magazine Cover Design category for Pakistan's New Nuke Threat’ and Modi's Outdated Army’ respectively.

The Malayala Manorama Company has been nominated for two photographs in the Best News Photography category, namely, ‘Bull By The Horns’ and ‘Nepal's Illegal Kidney Selling Village’.

Kasturi & Sons and Malayala Manorama are in the Best Sport Photography category for ‘Geremew & Jepchirchir are Champion’ and ‘Mud Soak Wonder’ respectively.

Jagran Prakashan has received two nominations in the Best Newspaper Marketing category for ‘A Newspaper on a mission to restore a City's Pride’ and ‘Crowdsourcing Imagination to Create the Newspaper for the Future by the Future’ campaigns.

The Malayala Manorama Company and Jagran Prakashan have been nominated in the Best Community Service category for their projects ‘Ardrakeralam Compassionate Kerala’ and ‘No more Going to the Jungle’ respectively.

The Asian Media Awards are given out to newspaper and magazine publishers based in Asia in 11 categories, namely, Newspaper Overall Design; Magazine Overall Design; Newspaper Front Page Design; Magazine Cover Design; Newspaper Breaking News Article; Newspaper Feature Article; Best Newspaper Infographics; Magazine Infographics; News Photography; Feature Photography; and Newspaper Marketing.

China Daily; South China Morning Post Publishers; Singapore Press Holdings; Mongoose Publishing; E-Quill Media; SPH Magazines; PT Kompas Media Nusantara; The Post Publishing Public Co; The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad; Star Media Group Berhad; Muscat Media Group; Dubai Media; Philippine Daily Inquirer; PT Jawa Pos Koran are the other nominees for the Awards.

The Publish Asia's conference addresses the management and business issues facing newspaper publishers and examines emerging new business models and revenue streams. It focuses on repositioning and optimising today’s news publishing business with an emphasis on print.

Publish Asia also offers a dedicated sessions focusing on the challenges facing editors, newsroom managers and journalists. This includes new initiatives, trends and solutions but also some of the heavyweight issues of concern to editors, including challenges to press freedom, the safety of journalists and sustainability.
