IIP announces food packaging workshop

The Indian Institute of Packaging, an autonomous body in India for packaging, has announced a national workshop on packaging of fresh and processed foods on 7 August in Kerala.

The one-day workshop is organised for the cottage, micro, small and medium entrepreneurs and will be held at The Residency Tower hotel in Trivandrum, Kerala.
 
Sponsored by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI), the seminar is claimed to provide immense value to all the sectors related to packaging of food - packaging industry, packaging machinery, packaging material user, food processor, quality control, R&D, and all business related to packaging and allied industries.  
 
Sharing the details of the programme, T Sreedath, assistant director of IIP Bengaluru, said, “The course is specifically designed to discuss packaging concepts and principles which influence packaging. The seminar will also cover developments in some of the key areas in packaging technology.”
 
The workshop will comprise theoretical as well as practical demonstration on the packaging machinery for fresh and processed food products. The practical knowledge about the operations of packaging machinery will help the industry members get firsthand experience in the packaging of processed food products.
 
“The small scale entrepreneurs dealing with the processing of food products will have immense benefits by participating in this programme,” added Sreedath.
 
P H Kurien, principal secretary of Industries and Information Technology department of Kerala has been invited as the chief guest for the occasion.
 
The session will see a brief note on functional characteristics of packaging materials and requirements of fresh and processed food products by Dr M R Manikantan of ICAR, Kerala. The conference will also cover processing technology and evaluation of packaging materials for food by R Kolappan and Sreedath Tulamandi, assistant directors, IIP, Chennai.
 
The practical session on flexible laminates and vacuum packaging will be demonstrated in the second half of the workshop.
 
The faculty at the seminar, comprising of industry veterans and seniors from the institute will help the participants to plan improvements in their own packaging systems.
 
Dr NC Saha, director of IIP has insisted all the stake holders in the food packaging industry to attend the one-day workshop. It will be a knowledge sharing opportunity for all in the industry. According to Saha, "The packaging industry worldwide is estimated to be worth USD 750 billion and in India it is worth USD 25 billion. Rated 13th under the consumption capacity and second under the growth rate, India is at the brink of accelerating its growth in packaging.”
 
“Of this, 65% is food packaging,” he added.
