GMG, the German developer of colour management solutions has announced the commercial availability of spectral-based OpenColor software.

“OpenColor is helpful for any printer or pre-press bureau for generating accurate colour contract proofs. This product is available for Indian customers and our engineers are trained in Germany to install and run the product,” said Afsal Kottal, business director, Percept Print Solutions who represents GMG in India and Middle East.

The software offers spot colour simulation and overprinting behaviour or colour interplay with the help of multicolour profiles created by simulating the printing behaviour of diverse printing technologies and media types.

According to GMG, though package printers are increasingly using multicolour printing, standardisation does not exist because spot colours and custom ink sets with more than four colours are typically used, along with a wide range of print processes and substrates.

The Software is connected to a centralised database for the secure management of spot colours which ensures that all connected GMG ColorProof systems use the same critical colour data. The user can create and manage his own spot colour database for the precise reproduction of specific printing conditions.

Kottal added, “GMG OpenColor helps achieve significant optimisation of the entire package printing process chain. Expensive machine downtime due to incorrect printing plates or cylinders is finally a thing of the past.

“The printers need to realize that colour management and accurate production data review really saves them money continuously after initial investment. We are working closely with printers in India from last five years.”

Explaining the benefits of colour management software Kottal said, “On our advice, many printers checked the total production planned hours, productive hours, and non-productive hours of their presses and found that they have 50 to 60% productive hours and they have scope to improve 15% in productivity.“

Sharing a case-study, Kottal said, “A Heidelberg CD 102 which had planned production of 450 hours a month, achieved around 270 productive hours. We found that the printer had around 45 hours which could have been avoided with proper colour managed workflow.  So if we say Rs 10,000 per hour is the cost, he can save around Rs 4,50,000 a month. We are ready to help printers with these kinds of studies to find out how they can become leaner and find profits from within operations.”

According to Kottal, colour management is not just proofing but its capacity to print similar colours on variable substrates. “Today, with the implementation of proper colour management colours are well within control and 100% predictable,” concluded Kottal
