Durst brings its Tau 330 digital UV press to India

Durst announced the launch of its Tau 330 digital UV label presses in India at the Labelexpo India. The Tau 330, which was unveiled at Drupa 2012, is based on the company’s 165mm-wide Tau 150 8C machine introduced in 2010.

Reifenhauser India will represent Durst for the range of its label printing machines.

Helmuth Munter, segment manager for label printing at Durst, Italy told PrintWeek India  that the Tau presses are targeted at short-run label production market. “When it comes to conventional, the Indian market is the same as other markets but for digital, Indian market is still at a nascent stage,” he said. “India will play a much bigger role as far as digital is concerned in the coming years.”

The Tau 330 offers print production onto a maximum 330mm web and is capable of print speeds of up to 50 linear meters per minute, maximum hourly output can reach over 1,000 sq/metre an hour. The Tau comes with a standard CMYK configuration that can be upgraded with white ink, orange and violet process colours.

The machine will also be available with variable data print option, which will enable users to print on pre-die-cut or pre-printed labels, which the manufacturer claims will offer "full label-to-label variability".

Munter said, “Overall speaking, UV inkjet offers you with the following advantages: it is scalable in terms of width, speed; it provides flexibility to eject new fluids like metallic inks, spot varnishing to create glossy effects.”

Digital printing does not need any makeready or press preparation and that’s a saving in time, material, operator cost, machine time and wastage. But pre-press in digital printing means preparing the file for proper output incorporating all complexities of the print job. “Whether its conventional platemaking or preparing file for proper output for digital printing, pre-press is the key to quality reproducibility,” says Munter. Hence, digital is a right tool when it comes to short runs and also medium runs, he says.

Durst’s primary target this year is to find at least three customers and create an environment for more. “If you talk about potential, India will have hundreds of digital label presses in next 5-7 years,” said Munter.
