"The competition in the market is tough and print is turning into commodity-like business," said Ramesh Patel, director Cyan Technologies. "And if I have to stop my business from commoditisation than I will need to innovate and set trends in motion."

The Rajkot-based wide-format specialist will be using the latest generation of HP's go green technology for inshop and outdoor branding at its Ahmedabad unit.

Cyan Technologies recently bagged contracts from Asian Paints, Bharti Airtel and Tata Docomo for their branding campaigns in Gujarat and the new installation will help influence the momentum of success. "We have been continuously investing in new equipments and with the latest investment we aim to improve our power over real prices and beat the commodity trap," said Patel.

The firm started as Umiyaji Advertising in 1995, before becoming Cyan Technologies in 2002. In the early days, the firm produced vehicle graphics and bus branding for Dilip Chhabria and Ashwemegh Travels' buses plying to Mumbai. Besides the L65500, Cyan also has a raft of other wide-format printers which includes Roland's FJ52, Mimaki's eco-solvent JV5, HP Designjet 5100 and India's first Flora UV F1-250 flatbed and roll-to-roll 8-ft printer.

Cyan Technologies carries out a wide range of jobs for retail branding, as well as work for "walk-in" customers that require small sized banners and posters. The firm has also embarked on getting itself ISO certification.
