Cortec introduces nitrite-free VCI

After the ban imposed by Toyota and other automobile giants on the use of nitrite-impregnated VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor) paper, Cortec has come up with a nitrite-free paper – CorShield VpCI-146, to store metal parts.

The paper complies with various international, federal and state regulatory requirements.

Cortec Corporation is a recognised name in the automobile sector. It manufactures anti-corrosion products and systems based on vapour-phase corrosion inhibition technology.

CorShield VpCI-146 is made from natural kraft paper without the use of chlorine or any other chemical bleach. After packing the metal parts, the chemicals in the paper volatilise in the surrounding environment and form a protective invisible molecular layer on the surface of the metal. This protective layer works as a barrier between metal surface and corrosion causing materials. Parts protected with VpCI-146 can be painted, welded, and soldered. The paper's protective layer does not influence physical properties of the most sensitive electrical components, including conductivity and resistance.

Boasting the company’s new achievement, Ana Juraga, marketing coordinator, Cortec, said, “The non-toxic, biodegradable ‘nitrite-free’ paper has revolutionised the way metals are protected in an enclosed package. The paper provides protection for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Additionally, VpCI-146 is very economical and eliminates the need for a variety of papers for all different types of metals and alloys. The FDA approved paper can also be recycled into other types of paper products such as boxes, cardboard, and other corrugated materials. It is free from nitrites, phosphates, silicones, chromates, or any other heavy metal.”

VpCI products have also been used by the Indian Navy. After inserting Cortec’s VpCI-132 foam pads, the entire engine was wrapped with VpCI-146 paper and sealed. “By switching to Cortec, the navy saved 60-70% on current cost and gained a non-hazardous, environmental-friendly solution for long term storage,” quoted Cortec in its press statement.
