Tech gyaan on digital printing

Among 64 digitally printed samples which were submitted as entries for PrintWeek India’s Digital Printer of the Year 2012 Award, the New Delhi-based Avantika Printers’ caught the eyes of the judges with their entries: Canon Media Catalogue for Canon India; and Glimpses of Thar, Suvali and a wall calendar for Cairn India.

Aantika has completed more than two decades in the print industry. The Canon dominated digital press floor houses a mono Oce 6160 (Gemnine technology) and Canon 1135 for single-colour work, three colour printing presses includes two Canon 7010 and one Konica Minolta 6000, a screen printing facility and a complete facility for pre-press and post-press, which produces an array of ingenious print jobs.

Delhi-based Avantika Printers has Pandey, a printing professional who has decades of experience in advertising and publishing industry. A man who is prone to uttering maxims like: “Digital is the grandson of print – and it is definitely the future.”
 
Pandey believes that four things create a great job. “They are men, machines, material and method ,” and as he says, “above all, the vision of the head of the organisation.”

Canon Media Catalogue

The Canon Media Catalogue showcases the capability of Canon Imagepress C7010VP to deliver quality printing on different substrates and image inputs.

Pre-press:In pre-press, Adobe Indesign and Enfocus Pitstop software were used for data handling and data verification to make print ready files. In addition, i1 process control was used to maintain colour consistency.
Press:30 copies of the media catalogue were printed on speciality papers from Cordenons, Fedrigoni, Galgo Paper and Sappi, using Canon Imagepress C7010VP system.
Post-press: The catalogue was wiro bound with hard cover jacket. The hard cover was made of special silver PU material. The special feature of the catalogue was that it had a traditional design decorated with customised UV.


Glimpses of Thar

 

The Glimpses of Thar, the coffee table book produced for Cairn India was specially appreciated by the judges.

Pre-press:The art work for the job was designed by corporate communications department of Cairn India. In pre-press, Adobe Indesign and Enfocus Pitstop software were used for data handling and data verification to make print ready files. In addition, i1 process control was used to maintain colour consistency.
Press:150 copies of the the book were printed using Canon Imagepress C7010VP system. Speciality papers from Cordenons and Hansol were used for the book which included 190gsm Montblanc for text; 120gsm Antique Gold for PLC; 285gsm Plike Brown for separators.
Post-press:The catalogue was hard bound with precisely aligned double spread pages. The separators were screen printed while the cover which was printed on metallic paper and decorated with gold foil stamping.


Suvali

 

Again a coffee table book produced for Cairn India, Suvali has a realtime visual feel of offshore drilling in sea created through digital printing on laminated foil substrate.

Pre-press:In pre-press, Adobe Indesign and Enfocus Pitstop software were used for data handling and data verification to make print ready files. In addition, i1 process control was used to maintain colour consistency.
Press:150 copies of the the book were printed using Canon Imagepress C7010VP system. The paper stock used for the job included 250gsm Mango matt paper and special silver metallic foil paper from Sappi
Post-press The book was hardbound with a special leatherite material. The main pages and separators were decorated with spot UV.


Wall Calendar

 

The digitally printed Wall Calendar was produced for Cairn India. “Wow! This looks like a LCD TV,” commented the impressed client.

Pre-press: The data handling and data verification for the job was accomplished using Adobe Indesign and Enfocus Pitstop software and i1 Process Control was used for achieving colour consistency.
Press: Avantika produced 100 copies of the wall calendar for Cairn India which were printed on 240gsm Rendezvous paper stock supplied by Galgo Fine Papers using a Canon Imagepress C7010VP.
Post-press:The calendar has a provision to change the sheet after every passing month and a pocket on the backside to hold the sheets. The post-press activities for the unique precisely fabricated job included die-cutting and frame making. The frame with a window which imparts a feel of LCD panel was produced from Smurfit Kappa board of 10mm thickness.

The wall calendar’s deceptive look as an LCD panel was the USP of this job. “Easy to change date sheet, fully functional was a modest innovation,” said M N Pandey of Avantika. He added, “It satisfied the discerning client.”
