UPM focuses on ecological message at Drupa

14 May 2012 |  Supreeth Sudhakaran   |   Comment Now

Finland-based paper specialist UPM who are exhibiting jointly with PrintCity Alliance at Hall 6, Stand D60 have been focusing on an ecological message.

Working in close cooperation with leading waste management company, Remondis, UPM has been recycling all printing paper waste collected at the Drupa exhibition. Printed and unprinted waste paper are being collected in containers and transported to Remondis' a baling facility, from where it will be transported to the UPM Hürth mill located close to Düsseldorf.

The collected wastes will be used as valuable raw material in UPM's paper production.

Talking about the initiative Päivi Rissanen, environmental director, UPM Paper Business Group said, “Reusing the valuable wood fibre at our UPM Hürth mill located close to Düsseldorf makes it possible to minimise the environmental impacts of transportation. This shows one aspect of our Biofore thinking coming to life.”

The company has also launched its new SwanBarrier paper range and its Digi Color jet paper with renewed properties. The ecological SwanBarrier paper range has been created for dry and greasy food wrappings.

The company states that the barrier properties of the SwanBarrier papers, such as water vapour barrier and medium grease resistance, have been achieved without any PE-coating or fluorochemicals thus they are fully recyclable and biodegradable.

UPM SwanBarrier light is available in 45 and 55 gsm and UPM SwanBarrier in 60 and 65 gsm. Both the products are suitable for flexo printing, and have BfR food certificate and FDA Food Certificate.

The Digi Color jet is a special surface treated paper. It is developed for dye-based inks and it provides improved print density and a wide colour gamut. UPM said that the product’s high ink drying speed enables fast print-outs without colour-to-colour bleed.

UPM is also displaying its new PDF workflow, colour management and print optimisation service ColorCTRL at its stands. It has been created in co-operation with Dalim Software and GMG. Dalim Software provides its ES workflow technology for the UPM ColorCTRL workflow online platform and the GMG ColorServer engine secures the print-ready pdf quality.

Proof to print match is obtained using the optimised GMG ColorProof software within the package. Colour accuracy of the final print product will be achieved by always up-to-date UPM paper profiles, service setup and consultancy.

“UPM ColorCTRL is an online service which allows easy collaboration with all partners in the value chain - from brand owner to advertising agency, publisher and printing house,” explains Gerd Carl, project manager for UPM ColorCTRL.”

Anika International is the Indian representative for UPM Paper.
